Directions for User
The usual dose is 2.5mg/lb. For dogs weighing 4-6.5lbs give one 10mg capsule and for dogs weighing 6.6-9lbs give two 10mg capsules The medication should be given 2 hours before or after feeding. Atopica is initially given once a day until satisfactory improvement is seen, usually 4 to 8 weeks. The medication can then be given every other day until the clinical signs of atopic dermatitis are satisfactorily controlled, then the medication can be given every 3 to 4 days.
The safety of use in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs has not been determined. It should not be used in dogs with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug. The drug should be avoided in dogs with kidney impairment, stomach ulcers and certain blood disorders. Prolonged use of Atopica can result in bacterial or fungal infection related to deficiency of the immune system. Atopica may decrease the immune response in case of malignancy. Atopica may interact with other medications such as ACE inhibitors, phenobarbital, cimetidine, cisapride, systemic coticosteroids, digoxin, griseofulvin, metoclopramide, metronidazole, NSAIDS, phenytoin, potassium salts, and Ketoconazole. The medication is bitter. Do not empty the contents of the capsule.
